Baking/Crafts

There’s always something to celebrate is the motto of the Baking and Crafting class!

Throughout the class we will be alternating baking one week and craft the following week. However, food is always fun to play with so keep in mind we will consider it a craft too! Depending on length of time required for baking we may also do a small craft same day.

Crafts are fun projects the students will either finish in class and at times can be finished at home. Class projects may consist of simple woodworking, painting, hand sew, no sew, tie dye, and much more.  Students can use items as samples for school in various ways and they will want to either keep for themselves or share by giving to friends and family.
For Baking we’ll be making delicious goodies easy enough for students to make and enjoy with
their families. Can also be used as a sample for schools with a picture paired with a brief paragraph written by student.

Recipes, supplies/materials are provided by On The GO Academy.

Beginner's Photography

Beauty in a scene to create an image.

Teaching kids photography doesn’t just give them the skills to take a good photograph! Photography helps kids to exercise their creative muscles and encourages exploration. It builds valuable visual and critical thinking skills for later in life. It’s important to use plenty of encouragement and build on each skill, moving on at whatever pace works for the child’s skill level. We encourage practice with photography exercises and giving them time with a camera.

Camera suggestion: one that’s durable, easy to use, and offers different shooting modes. For example, waterproof cameras are great for kids because they are hard to destroy. An older child may do well with a used, inexpensive DSLR camera. As the instructor I will be bringing in my own camera to allow the students to practice functions, shooting photos, and many methods taught throughout the class. However, if students would like to bring a camera from home it is ideal so they can become more familiar with it. Bringing in a camera also would be helpful to allow more freedom to take pictures during class vs waiting for others to complete their time and share the camera amongst the class.

Brave Writer Concepts Read Comp/Writing

Each class includes a short book read or activity and comprehension discussion led by the teacher followed by a writing assignment. Understanding and knowing how to read is so valuable in learning how to become a writer. Our younger students will be mostly focused on sentence structure and beginning paragraphs. Those who are ready to begin essays they will be assigned one essay to be worked on throughout the semester. Older students (typically 5th/6th and above) will be assigned an essay based on their proven abilities shown in class (2-3 essays/projects in the semester). All students are strongly encouraged by the end of semester to present their essay paper of choice to the class.

We use the Brave Writer concept however, it is not a requirement for students to be using Brave Writer at home. Our goal is to get students to gain more interest and excitement while learning how to build sentences to paragraphs to essays! Getting over the anxiety of putting thoughts into a well written paper can be a difficult task. We use the Brave Writer approach because being patient and taking steps is so important when it comes to the writing process. Each child is on their own individual journey of writing. We will begin our class in the partnership writing phase and ease into the ownership phase. Some may not be ready for the next phase and that’s okay! Students can be in various stages in this class and still enjoy learning together. Those who can do more will do more with gentle guidance and by gaining confidence. They will realize they can successfully write all on their own and actually enjoy it too!

Everyone can be a writer! I look forward to meeting and working with your student to find joy in the writing process.
