Description

Welcome! I’m Mrs Kristen and I thoroughly enjoy teaching Language Arts to youth. One of my favorite things to do is read a book surrounded by kiddos and get them completely engaged with the story. The beginning of learning to read and write has so much to do with you as an individual and makes it so much more fun when diving into any learning process.

Each class includes a short book read by the teacher and a reading comprehension activity followed by a writing assignment because knowing how and understanding reading is so valuable in learning how to become a writer. In addition, for students who are ready to begin essays they will be assigned one essay to be worked on throughout the semester.

In the Writing Explores class we use the Brave Writer concept. It is not a requirement for students to be using Brave Writer at home. Our goal is to get students to gain more interest and excitement while learning how to build sentences to paragraphs to beginning essays! Getting over the anxiety of putting thoughts into a well written paper can be a difficult task. We use the Brave Writer approach because being patient and taking steps is so important when it comes to the writing process. Each child is on their own individual journey of writing. We will begin our class in the partnership writing phase and ease into the ownership phase. Some may not be ready for the next phase and that’s okay! Students can be in various stages in this class and still enjoy learning together. Those who can do more will do more with gentle guidance and by gaining confidence. They will realize they can successfully write all on their own and actually enjoy it too!

Everyone can be a writer! I look forward to meeting and working with your student to find joy in the writing process.

We suggest if your student is already in the process of writing essays they may want to join the middle / high school class.
